Eleven years ago, I left Capitol Hill after serving more than a decade as Jay Rockefeller’s Chief of Staff, to help GH start a global public affairs practice. My goal was to apply what I had learned in politics, public service and policy to clients both outside and inside the Beltway. People ask me nearly everyday — do you miss the Senate? My answer without hesitation is ‘no’. GolinHarris has made it possible for me to
continue to pursue my passions for public service and shares my commitment to public policy. We’ve created a very different approach to public affairs, one that reflects a deep understanding of consumers, of companies and the politicians that represent them in the US and around the world.

Too few people understand that how an organization talks about itself, markets its products and presents its brand to consumers and influencers has direct relevance to how successful it can be in achieving its public policy goals. I’ve been privileged to help assemble a team of very talented people who are a bridge between the policy and consumer worlds. We know that although public policy is decided in the halls
of Congress and Parliaments, it is often shaped in both local and online communities; consumers are voters and voters are consumers; brands and reputations are shaped on Main Street, on Wall Street and, increasingly, at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.

For GH, this view is grounded in something very important — a real respect for democracy and everyone’s role in it — from our big multinational corporate clients to the McDonald’s customers that Al Golin introduced this agency and the world to more than a half century ago. These are the reasons I come to work every morning and the reasons why my job never really changed — I still make a difference.
